ACCgreenhomeFor the past year, Austin Community College students have worked with partners from around the city to create an energy efficient, tiny home. The 288 square-foot-home is now ready to live in, and is up for auction.

“It’s a nifty house,” says Peter Pfeiffer, Principal of Barley Pfeiffer Architecture. “Everybody likes a nifty design.”

Pfeiffer’s company designed the house, helping students understand exactly how to build each square inch. From the kitchen to the placement of windows, the tiny home is high in efficiency and low in maintenance.

“Years, actually, of thought have gone into it,” explains Matt Hart, Associate Principal of the company. “And probably over a hundred of hours of actually working on the drawings.”

“We designed and engineered this building not only to be nifty building to sell and raise money for the school, but to be a demonstration to the young crop of builders coming up as to how to build better,” said Pfeiffer.

The ACC students involved in the project were enrolled in the Building Construction Technology Program at the Round Rock campus. Volunteer labor from various construction companies helped them complete the job.

“For my generation and younger, there’s a lot of people that want to have a smaller impact, smaller footprint, but also don’t want to be living in say, a double-wide,” said Hart.

“There’s lots of details involved in this little house that will show builders and people how to live more efficiently,” Pfeiffer said.

Bidding on eBay starts at $37,800, with a “buy-it-now” price of $49,800.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go toward an endowment set up by the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin to support green building construction technologies at ACC. The remainder will be used to support HBA’s education programs.
